Our approach

A storm door is the cheapest insurance for an expensive entry door.

Storm doors don't get a lot of glamour, but they extend the life of the entry door behind them by years. They cut down UV exposure on the finish, block driving rain from the threshold, and add an air pocket that improves insulation. Picking the right configuration — full-view, ventilating, or security — depends on what the door is doing.

Most south- and west-facing entry doors take real abuse from sun and weather. A full-view storm door with a removable screen panel costs a fraction of replacing a sun-damaged entry door early. For north-facing doors that get less weather, ventilating storms with retractable screens add the option of fresh air without giving up security.

What's included

Scope of the work.

Every project quote is itemized. Here's what tends to be in scope on a typical project.

01

Door fit measurement

Storm doors need to fit the existing opening precisely. We measure to ensure the storm door closes flush against the entry door without binding or air gaps.

02

Entry door condition check

If the entry door's frame or threshold has hidden damage, we'll find it before mounting the storm door. Addressing problems first prevents headaches later.

03

Configuration selection

Full-view (max light, removable screen), ventilating (retractable screen for airflow), or security (heavier frame, optional reinforced glass). We recommend based on door orientation and use.

04

Frame & closer install

Storm door frame mounted to the entry door frame, hydraulic closer adjusted for the door weight, latch and handle hardware installed and tested.

05

Weatherstripping & seal

Storm doors only save energy if they seal. We install or replace weatherstripping at all four edges, check for air leakage, and adjust until the seal is consistent.

06

Operation walkthrough

We demonstrate closer adjustment, screen-to-glass swap if applicable, and proper use. Most storm door failures come from misuse — we want you to know how to operate it correctly.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Specific to this service. The full FAQ covers everything else.

Do I really need a storm door?

Not strictly, but they're one of the highest-ROI exterior additions. They protect the entry door's finish, add insulation, and let you ventilate in shoulder seasons. For doors that face direct sun or weather, a storm door usually pays back via extended entry-door lifespan alone.

Full-view or ventilating storm door — which is better?

Full-view doors maximize light and look cleaner. Ventilating doors have a retractable or interchangeable screen that lets you open the entry door for airflow while keeping the screen closed. We recommend ventilating doors for homes that get good cross-ventilation; full-view for doors where the visual impact matters more.

Can a storm door damage my entry door?

If sized and installed wrong, yes. The space between a storm door and a south-facing entry door can heat up enough on hot days to damage fiberglass or wood finishes. We use vented storm doors or recommend lighter glazing on south-facing installations to prevent this. It's the kind of detail that gets missed by less experienced installers.

How long does storm door installation take?

Most storm door installations are a half-day job. Sites with damaged trim or frame issues can extend to a full day. We never start a storm door install if we find structural problems on the entry door — we'll quote the entry door fix first.
